What should the temperature be in the sauna?
The correct temperature for a sauna is a long-standing topic of debate. Some believe the steam room should be 50-60 degrees Celsius with 70% humidity. Others believe it should be at least 70 degrees—otherwise it’s too cold! A hygrometer should show 45-50% humidity.
In this article, we’ll explore the optimal temperature for a wood-fired sauna, how it affects well-being, and discuss the temperature regime in Siberia.
What temperature should a steam room be?
People go to the banya not just to wash and relax, but also for health benefits. Treatments in a warm, humid, enclosed space have a positive effect on joints and skin, help with weight loss, and strengthen the immune system.
On the one hand, the temperature in the steam room can be adjusted to suit each visitor. On the other hand, there are established GOST conditions and modes for the banya. According to Russian GOST 32670-2014 «Household Services. Bathhouse and Shower Services. General Specifications,» the temperature in a Russian banya should be between 40 and 60 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, the benches warm up to a comfortable temperature, and touching them with bare skin feels pleasantly warm. You won’t get burned or feel pain, and you’ll be able to fully relax.
At Siberia, the maximum temperature in the steam room doesn’t exceed 65 degrees Celsius, and we maintain humidity at 70%. This temperature regime makes bathing safe and comfortable: breathing is easy, and the bath whisks don’t burn the skin.
Maximum sauna temperature
An experienced sauna user can stay in a steam room at 105 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit) for 25 minutes without harm. The highest temperature the human body can withstand is 120 degrees Celsius (222 degrees Fahrenheit). However, this temperature is not reserved for public saunas and ordinary guests, but for competitions: such competitions are held annually in Finland, and the winner is the person who can sit in a specially equipped sauna for the longest time. An ambulance crew is always present at such events, and numerous judges and spectators watch the participants. At competitions, washing, relaxation, and wellness are not considered: the main goal is to test one’s strength and endurance. Unfortunately, burns to the upper respiratory tract and skin are quite common among participants.
It’s important to understand that high temperatures can lead to overheating and heatstroke. Steaming should be a joy! Don’t push yourself and steam in extreme temperatures. Maintaining a balance of temperature and humidity will ensure a healthy and comfortable experience. You can use a simple formula: the sum of the two values should ideally be between 100 and 130 degrees. For example, if the temperature is 70, then the humidity is 60.
The Effects of Sauna Treatments on the Body
Be prepared for your body temperature to rise to 38-40 degrees Celsius (100-104 degrees Fahrenheit) when visiting a steam room. This is the body’s natural response to the sauna’s microclimate, the warming of the body, and heavy sweating. This causes your metabolic rate to increase by 1.5-2 times—depending, of course, on the temperature in the sauna and the length of your stay.
In general, scientists have reliably established that sauna treatments have a positive effect on various body systems. For example, relaxing in a sauna:
Diastolic blood pressure decreases.
Respiratory function improves.
Blood flow increases, which trains the cardiovascular system.
Sweat removes metabolic waste from the body.
The white blood cell count increases by 15-20%.
Warming up the body followed by cooling—dousing it with water or immersing it in an ice bath—stimulates the nervous system and strengthens the immune system.
These effects may not seem obvious, but you’ll definitely notice a reduction in stress levels and a sense of harmony with yourself and others.
Humidity and Temperature
Humidity plays an equally important role as temperature. In a Russian banya, humidity is typically 40-60%. Combined with temperature, this creates a gentle yet effective warming effect on the body. If the humidity and temperature are too high, the steam bath can become uncomfortable and even dangerous, as the body will overheat too quickly.
The optimal balance of humidity and temperature ensures maximum health and relaxation.
Banya Rules
To ensure maximum benefit and avoid harm from the bath ritual, it’s important to consider the recommendations and contraindications, especially at high temperatures.
Preparing for the banya:
Avoid heavy meals an hour before entering the banya. A light snack, such as fruit or yogurt, would be more appropriate.
Remember to drink plenty of water before entering the sauna to avoid dehydration.
Steam Room Time:
Start with short stays (5-7 minutes), gradually increasing to 10-15 minutes.
At high temperatures (90°C or higher), do not stay in the sauna for more than 10 minutes at a time. Wear a sauna hat to protect your head from overheating.
Cooling Down After the Sauna:
Be sure to take a cool shower or plunge into the pool after each sauna session. After cooling down, allow your body to rest for 10-15 minutes, covered with a towel or sheet.
Hydration:
During the sauna session, drink water, herbal tea, or fruit juice, avoiding alcohol and sugary carbonated drinks.
Contraindications for visiting the sauna in extreme heat
Cardiovascular disease. People with hypertension, arrhythmia, and other heart conditions should avoid high temperatures in the sauna.
Pregnancy. In the late stages of pregnancy, it is recommended to avoid visiting a steam room with high temperatures.
Infectious diseases. Visiting a sauna is contraindicated in cases of acute infections, elevated body temperature, colds, or the flu.
A sauna is an excellent place for health and relaxation if you follow simple rules and take into account the specific conditions.и своего организма. Помните, что здоровье всегда должно быть на первом месте!
